Tanglaw UK

Tanglaw is a Filipino term which means light. Tanglaw UK is a not-for-organisation that aims to promote Filipino cultural heritage alongside goodwill between persons toward the building or a just, compassionate and tolerant group and not limited to Filipinos in a multicultural Britain.

Tanglaw UK is in the register of Charities of Englad and Wales with the registration number 1067399.

THE BEGINNINGS

Tanglaw UK, originally named as LINGAP (Ligaya ng Alinmang Pilipino), was founded by Filipino Migrant Workers over 3 decades ago with the aim to support the needs of single mothers living in the UK. With no young and dynamic recruits to take over the ageing founders and members, LINGAP lost its lustre whilst varrying needs of the Filipino community continue to grow. The Charity Commission made changes to their requirements of who to keep in the register and in 2015 it decided to deregister LINGAP.

On appeal, the Trustees, whilst disagreeing to not meeting the minimum amount of funds to operate, reasoned why LINGAP should be allowed to exists one of which was being the voice of the community and if not one of the earliest charitable Filipino organisations in the UK, it was the first. The appeal was allowe. A couple of old members rejoined and a revamp commenced.

Meetings after meeting of the Trustees concluded with LINGAP needing a repalcement name. Community consultation was launched to include the name it wanted to change into and in 2017 Tanglaw UK was adopted.
